Guantanamo is an American detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This facility is used for non-military terrorist suspects.

They are held without any trial or another chance to prove their innocence. The United States of America violate their own principle of “liberty and justice for all” in the attempt to fight the terrorism towards them. However, America cannot win if she loses her admired standards. These standards are the constitutional rights. By imprisoning suspects without an official court sentence and not letting the prisoners know when or whether they will eventually be released, these rights are violated by the American government who wants to protect their nation. Unfortunately, terror attacks cannot be completely prevented by arresting terrorist suspects. Also, the hate towards the U.S.A. increases as unjust punishments are given. That makes it possible to recruit even more terrorists. But the United States of America do not fight alone. A lot of countries help with providing forces, supplies or money. They decided to do so because these countries’ principles are the same as the U.S. ones. By doing so, the United States’ allies were not only willing to support but also made themselves targets for terrorist attacks. As America violates her own principles, she also betrays her allies who are important in the fight during the Jihad. Guantanamo shows that America is willing to let go her of old and valuable principles in order to appear more powerful. Sadly, the United States of America achieve the opposite. They seem vulnerable and since they lose their standards, their good reputation vanishes. With this reputation the actual American power over the world decreases. Other countries and even continents are not as influenced by U.S. media anymore. That is exactly what the terrorists declared the Jihad, their holy war, for – to reduce the American power and influence. As mentioned before, it is not possible to win against terrorism by imprisoning suspected or proofed terrorists in special facilities without the chance of a trial. There will always be new recruits unless America decides to adapt to the Islamic ideals. However, this act would undoubtedly not lead to an American victory but to a defeat. The United States of America cannot win this fight since they are fighting against a belief, not a certain people. Their only chance is to keep the values which they cherish. America can protect herself on any way that does not interfere with her honored self, and the hardest task is to stand brave because the enemies will fight even harder, they will not “[give one] two spoonfuls of meal to comfort [one]” (Mary Rowlandson, A Narrative of the Captivity, The Sixth Remove) or “half a pint of peas.” (Mary Rowlandson, A Narrative of the Captivity, The Sixth Remove) But not to give in shows real power and frightens one’s enemies the most. Another opportunity, one should not ignore, is to show the terrorists America’s good side. They try to destroy this country because it is evil in their eyes. In Mary Rowlandson’s A Narrative of the Captivity the author writes about stranger Indians who treat her with kindness. Before that she saw Indians just like terrorists see our society. Mary Rowlandson suggests treating enemies well, so that they cannot say a bad thing about one, and so that the hate vanishes. This could be one of a few solutions for America.
